New Urban Area in Central Thái Nguyên – A Rising Investment Destination in 2026

In 2026, amid a strong economic breakthrough, Thái Nguyên Province is rising to affirm its position as a core urban hub in the northern region. Against this backdrop, the province is rolling out large-scale, synchronized urban development projects that fulfill key economic, cultural, and administrative functions.

These initiatives also aim to elevate the quality of public spaces and enhance the overall urban landscape, aligning with the province’s long-term development vision for the new phase.

The Void After Festival Lights and the Challenge of Creating a True Destination Economy

Thái Nguyên is increasingly establishing itself as an attractive destination for multinational corporations, thanks to steadily improving regional connectivity infrastructure and a modern investment environment. In terms of foreign direct investment (FDI), the province consistently ranks among the top 10 nationwide in cumulative registered capital.

By the end of 2025, Thái Nguyên had attracted 244 FDI projects with a total registered capital of approximately $11.38 billion, while maintaining one of the country’s leading export turnovers for many years. In a notable milestone, state budget revenue surpassed VND 28,000 billion for the first time ever—the highest figure on record—providing a solid foundation for sustainable local development.

Following the administrative merger with Bắc Kạn Province, Thái Nguyên’s population now exceeds 1.8 million, unlocking substantial potential for the domestic consumer market. However, from an urban planning perspective, a “spatial paradox” persists: the commercial and entertainment structure remains spontaneous, fragmented, and poorly integrated, falling short of matching the province’s economic scale and population size.

Võ Nguyên Giáp Square has long served as the venue for major political and cultural events—such as the 2025 Tea Festival and the 2026 New Year Countdown—yet it is increasingly strained by capacity limits. The dazzling festival lights, vibrant music, and crowds have created explosive moments that boost tourism and the local economy. But once the lights dim, the central area lacks “anchors” to sustain everyday urban vitality.

The absence of well-planned, multi-functional complexes has left a significant gap: dynamic young people, multi-generational families, international experts working in industrial parks, and tourists are forced to seek higher-quality experiences in other cities. This not only results in an outflow of economic resources but also constrains the growth momentum of a modern urban center.

Global models of pedestrian streets and central plazas—such as Place Vendôme in Paris, Oxford Street in London, and Shibuya in Tokyo—have proven highly effective. These spaces not only become lively destinations but also play a vital role in creating cultural landmarks, driving tourism, and stimulating regional economic growth.

Central Square Project and the New Urban Development Trend in Central Thái Nguyên

To complete the puzzle for a vibrant and dynamic Thái Nguyên, on January 16, 2025, the Provincial People’s Committee approved the investment policy for a new urban area and central pedestrian street project in Thái Nguyên City, commercially branded as Central Square Thái Nguyên.

Upon completion and operation, Central Square Thái Nguyên is positioned to become a multi-functional central hub that integrates economic, cultural, and administrative activities for the city. The project is expected to foster community connections, invigorate urban life, and breathe new vitality into the heart of Thái Nguyên.

When integrated with Võ Nguyên Giáp Square, the combined area is anticipated to form a large-scale public space complex capable of accommodating nearly 100,000 people.

The project adopts an integrated model that blends residential spaces with commercial, cultural, and functional zones. In terms of planning, shopping streets, dining areas, and outdoor amenity spaces are thoughtfully interwoven to optimize connectivity and support diverse community activities.

Aimed at creating a concentrated service cluster, the development is set to attract leading brands seeking prime business locations and branding opportunities in the Thái Nguyên market. Product offerings include various real estate types suitable for both long-term residence and commercial exploitation, targeting customers who value sustainability and synchronized infrastructure standards.

The development of an urban area anchored by a central square and large-scale pedestrian precinct represents a strategic step in elevating Thái Nguyên’s urban image while generating fresh momentum for modern, integrated socio-economic activities.

The Central Square Thái Nguyên project reflects the province’s new development orientation—toward a dynamic, well-equipped urban center that enhances its appeal within the broader growth landscape of northern Vietnam.
